Ruby never asked for the abilities that almost cost her her life. Now she must call upon them on a daily basis. Other kids in the Children’s League call Ruby ‘Leader’, but she knows what she really is – a monster. When Ruby is entrusted with an explosive secret, she must embark on her most dangerous mission yet – leaving the Children’s League behind. Crucial information about the disease that killed most of America’s children – and turned Ruby and the others who lived into feared and hated outcasts – has survived every attempt to destroy it. But the truth is only saved in one place – in the hands of Liam Stewart, the boy Ruby once believed was her future and who now wouldn’t recognize her.

As Ruby sets out across a desperate, lawless country to find Liam, she is torn between old friends and the promise she made to serve the League. Ruby will do anything to protect the people she loves. But what if winning the war means losing herself.

I picked up my copy of Never Fade pretty much as soon as I had finished The Darkest Minds. I absolutely adored the first installment of this series. It left me with so many questions (in a good way!), and the way it ended left me needing to know what was going to happen as soon as possible. And to hopefully mend my broken heart!

Although I enjoyed Never Fade, it definitely didn’t have me as gripped as The Darkest Minds. The sequel picks up not long after the final events of The Darkest Minds, and it becomes apparent very quickly that Ruby has changed. The things she has seen and done have toughened her up, and made her cold and withdrawn. Unfortunately I don’t think these changes were for the better of the story and I ended up starting to get annoyed with her very quickly.

We are introduced to a lot of new characters quite quickly, and sadly I did not connect with most of them. A lot of this I think is because the way Ruby was portrayed, and the fact that she didn’t really form relationships with the new characters. I spent a lot of the time missing what the original group had, and wishing that the story had just stuck with them! However, there was one character that really did intrigue me, which was Liams brother Cole. I was interested in him from the very beginning, and definitely eager to learn about him and his life since this all went down.. He is one of the things that really kept me interested in the story.

When we finally got back to some of the OG squad, a lot had changed, and I didn’t like a lot of the changes. However, I did really enjoy the plot line that lead too some of the original characters being together again! It was action packed, exciting and had me nervous all the way through! But unfortunately I found myself not enjoying the new dynamics between the characters after this part of the story ended, and the reasoning behind the changes in their relationships didn’t feel real enough to me. I think the changes with all the relationships was all too drastic, and all at once, and it left me wanting more from them all.

Something I really loved about Never Fade was finding out more about the Children’s League, and the disease that started this all to begin with. Some of my questions were definitely answered, but I was left with a whole set of new ones and once again in a good way! It was great to get some more information about it all and with a great twist at the end, I definitely want to continue the series to finally find out exactly what happened and why! I have my theories and I am excited to see if I am right, or if this series is going to go in a completely different direction.

Overall I felt that after the excitement of The Darkest Minds, Never Fade was quite boring at times. Although when it was exciting,  it had me on the edge of my seat! I do feel like it dragged on a fair bit, and that the same story could have been told a lot more quickly I also feel that the characters could have been portrayed better so that the reader could connect with them more. However with all the new information we received throughout the story, I am definitely eager to pick up the next installment!
