What Was I Scared Of by Dr Seuss – REVIEW

Since I have a crazy, cute & clever little toddler at my disposal, I thought it was time we shined a little spotlight on some of our favourite Children’s Books! My hope is that Little Miss 2 will be able to help me with a few reviews each month, so that we can share these wonderful stories with you and your little ones too.

Then I was deep within the woods
When, suddenly, I spied them.
I saw a pair of pale green pants
Wth nobody inside them!

Turn out the lights and say hello to Dr. Seuss’s spookiest character… the pair of empty trousers, with nobody inside them!
First published as part of The Sneetches and Other Stories collection, this all-time favourite story of Dr. Seuss’s is now published on its own in this very special edition with a glow-in-the-dark finale! – Harper Collins NZ

So when the lovely people at Harper Collins asked me if I wanted to review the Special Edition of What Was I Scared Of? with Little Miss 2, it was an immediate YES from me. Not only do we love Dr Seuss, but Little Miss 2 loves anything ‘spooky’ so this sounded perfect for her.

The first thing we did was turn out the light and check out the glow in the dark images. It was very exciting and they definitely do glow! Little Miss 2 couldn’t believe it, and kept saying “Wow, look!”.

As we got into the story, she was gasping and pointing and saying “oooh spooky” quite a lot. It’s definitely not a scary book, so don’t worry about  nightmares, but it is quite suspenseful, and full of some great lessons.

In ‘What Was I Scared Of?‘ the main character comes across a pair of spooky green pants, that have nobody inside them! He does his best to not be scared, but he cannot help it. The empty green pants terrify him, until he discovers that the pants are just as scared of him as he is of them.

It’s is such a great lesson for our little learners. Letting them know that it is okay to admit when we are scared, and that if we face our fears we may learn that there was nothing to be frightened of in the first place!

As well as the fun lessons our children learn from Dr Seuss, the fact that he loved to rhyme is definitely something that I as a parent love too. The rhythm of a rhyming story is something that children love, and it also makes for a fast paced read (which is perfect for those nights when you are more than ready for bedtime 😉 )

I found myself laughing along with her at the silliness of this book. The pants, with no one inside them, riding a bike was probably our favourite part. She couldn’t stop giggling, which made me laugh too. It was definitely a really fun bedtime story and Little Miss 2 loved it!

We now have to read ‘What Was I Scared Of?‘ quite often. Little Miss 2 calls it the ‘Pant’s Book’, and she likes to yell out ‘IT’S THE PANTS’ every time they are on the page. “THERE’S NO ONE INSIDE THEM” is also another phrase you may hear her yelling as we read this book. This is one that I don’t mind reading to her over and over. It is so silly, fun, and spooky, with an underlying lesson in there too, which is just the way I like a Children’s Book!

As usual, I like to try and find activities that tie in with the books I read Little Miss 2. I found some really great ideas for ‘What Was I Scared Of?“, and here are some of my favourites.

I found this great post on planting your very own Grin-itch Spinach over at Happy Birthday Author. We have already planted Spinach in our container garden this year, but I think we may have to plant a separate pot of Grin-itch Spinach too!

Another fun activity I found over at obSEUSSed was to make your own glow in the dark pants! This one is very cool, and I may have to do this with Miss 2 for Halloween!

We can’t wait to do our ‘What Was I Scared Of?‘ activities, and I hope you and your little ones love them too!

Have you read What Was I Scared Of? to your little one?
Did they love it as much as Miss 2?

Aww this sounds SO cute! I have some nephews/nieces who adore Dr. Seuss already but I hadn’t heard of this book at all yet. 😱 I will definitely make sure they get to read it!
