Negative Bookworms on Social Media – DISCUSSION POST
So this is something that has been on my mind a lot lately, as I have been seeing it a lot more often… Negative Bookworms! Now I realise that I could possibly be referred to as a Negative Bookworm after this post, but I just need to rant for a moment. I want to start a discussion, and I want your opinions! (Pinky promise I won’t be judgmental if yours is different than mine)
I am a part of a few different groups throughout different social media platforms for Bookworms. The idea of these groups is fantastic… a place where Book Lovers from all over the world can come and share their love of books with like minded people. Sounds great right!? Well, lately I haven’t been finding them so great.
It seems that over the last year the amount of negative posts about books is starting to outnumber the positive. The place where I used to see endless discussions about the series, authors, characters and stories that we love has turned into a sea of posts filled with words like “hate”, “worst” and “pet peeve”. Oh and by the way… my pet peeve, is all the damn pet peeve posts! And while we are here… my unpopular opinion, is that I am really sick of all the damn unpopular opinion posts! Sometimes I wonder if some of these people commenting like any books at all!
Now don’t get me wrong, I believe that we are all entitled to our own opinions, and that it’s okay to have a discussion about what we did not like just as much as what we did like. Of course we can express when we don’t like something, and this is not about writing a review that has negative points, or expressing your dissatisfaction in a book. It is more the unnecessary negativity and all the judging. What is really getting to me is that 80% of the posts I am now seeing are so so negative and that a huge chunk of those are very judgmental towards other readers.
Books are so special to me, and my love for them is immense. I always thought the idea of these groups was for people who felt the same way as me, to join together to share our LOVE of books, and not make people feel bad for what books they enjoyed because your opinion on them is different.
Now these posts don’t stop with just opinion on the stories themselves. They continue on to be negative about the way people choose to read, whether or not they like a structured TBR or to go with the flow, sharing book hauls, sticking to a few genres or a large variety, it seriously just never ends. We are all so different, and we all do things the way that works best for us. I don’t understand why people can’t just scroll on past, instead of having to jump in the comments section to tell people why they are wrong, or why they shouldn’t like what they like, or do things the way they do them.
I have had to step back from a few groups because the negativity was getting to me, however I have stuck around a few with the hopes that it becomes more positive again because I loved it so much when it was. It will be nice to one day be able to post again about my love of a book, without people feeling the need to write judgey comments because their opinion differs to mine. I want to be connected with the people that share my love, not the people that hate my love.
I want to be able to post about everything from my obsession with YA, to my interest in Surrealism, to my love of Poetry, and have people be like “Huh, thats cool… I’m not a fan but I’m happy you love it so much” instead of tearing me down for having different likes and loves than they do. And then I can connect with the people that do share my likes and loves, which is really what I think everyone is looking for!
Until the day these groups become more positive, I have all you lovelies in the blogging community, writing amazing content, leaving wonderful comments and motivating each other. So thank you so much to all of you who are keeping it positive and showing the love!
