The Wolves of Mercy Falls Series – REVIEW

I stumbled across a brand new box set of The Wolves of Mercy Falls series in our local used bookstore and I couldn’t believe my luck. It was in wonderful condition, and at a bargain price, so I knew it was meant to be! Before this series, the only other work I had read by Stiefvater was The Raven Cycle, which is one of my favourite book series’ ever. Such a beautiful story told in the most beautiful way. So it is safe to say, I went into this series with very high expectations! Now, it definitely did not surpass The Raven Cycle (I mean, that is almost impossible anyway!), however I did really really enjoy it!

*No Spoilers*

Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls #1)

Author: Maggie Stiefvater

Published: August 2009 by Scholastic Press

Genres: Young Adult, Urban Fantasy, Supernatural, Romance

Page Count: 390 Pages

Source: Used Bookstore

The first book in the series is Shiver, and it definitely sets up an intriguing story that you want to learn more and more about. I found it a little slow to begin with, but honestly I think that was simply because my expectations were so high. Once I got into the flow of the writing, I was hooked.

This story is full of mysterious, intriguing and fast paced moments, but it also has so many beautiful and quiet moments that pull you in with their sweetness. There are characters to love (new book boyfriends on my list, that’s for sure!) and characters to love to hate *cough parents cough*. Once again Stiefvater impresses me with the way that she describes nature. So beautiful.

Then Shiver ends in a way that makes you desperate to pick up the next book…

Linger (The Wolves of Mercy Falls #2)

Author: Maggie Stiefvater

Published: July 2010 by Scholastic Press

Genres: Young Adult, Urban Fantasy, Supernatural, Romance

Page Count: 360 Pages

Source: Used Bookstore

First I would like to point out how gorgeous the cover of Linger is! I mean, the whole series is so pretty, but the green with the forest and the wolf *heart eyes*. I definitely admired the cover a lot as I made my way through this one. I ended up enjoying Linger more than Shiver, which is so great when that happens with a series! Just when you think you know what to expect (or often expect the second to not be as good), you get pleasantly surprised!

This book kind of turned the first book on its head and made us look at everything from a different perspective. Once again we had plenty of quiet and sweet moments (all the poetry makes me swoon), but the fast paced stuff was even more intense!

And in a similar fashion to Shiver, Linger ended and I needed to pick up Forever immediately.

Forever (The Wolves of Mercy Falls #3)

Author: Maggie Stiefvater

Published: July 2011 by Scholastic Press

Genres: Young Adult, Urban Fantasy, Supernatural, Romance

Page Count: 388 Pages

Source: Used Bookstore

Okay! Forever! My favourite of the three books for sure (a certain Rock Star may have had something to do with my love for this book). The intrigue that has built up through the last two books finally comes to a head in the third, and I could not wait to find out how it was all going to turn out. I became more invested in characters outside of the main couple, and I always really love when side characters develop to a point where they become your favourite!

As I got towards the end I found myself slowing down my pace because I didn’t want it to be over. As soon as I finished and closed the book, I had that overwhelmingly sad feeling that you only get when you finish a book you were so immersed in. It took me a few days to pull myself back out of Mercy Falls.

I am incredibly sad that it is all over, but I am super happy that there is another book that follows the series in a way! Now unfortunately I do not yet own ‘Sinner’, so a review on that one will have to wait until I manage to get my hands on a copy. But I am very excited for when I finally do!

If you have read The Wolves of Mercy Falls series tell me what you thought of it!

Is it crazy that I have never read anything by Maggie Stiefvater? And I even own this whole series and the first two of The Raven Boys series. I need to get reading these! I’m so glad you liked this series. I have always been hesitant to start it because I don’t really like books with wolves, for some reason. However, I definitely want to give it a try. Happy reading!

Before this I had only read The Raven Cycle, and it became one of my all time favourites. I was a bit scared to pick up anything else by Stiefvater because my expectations were so high after The Raven Cycle. But I really did enjoy this series. And I agree with you about the Wolf thing. I’m not generally into much with Werewolves either (other than Teen Wolf, haha), but it was done a little different than the standard Wolf story I was used to which was refreshing.

I think you should definitely read them when you get the time 🙂

[…] I enjoyed all of them, but my favourites were definitely The Wolves of Mercy Falls series. I am such a huge fan of Stiefvaters work. Her ability to describe the surroundings is so wonderful, that I feel as though I am there. She is also fantastic at writing boys that were destined for my Book Boyfriends list. You can read my review on the series HERE. […]
