Never Have I Ever… read Percy Jackson – UPDATE

So I recently posted on the blog about how I had never read Percy Jackson and the Olympians series… I know, I know! I am really late to the party for this one! Once you get over the shock, you can read my original postΒ HERE. So I have decided to rectify this blemish on my reading record, and I started my read of the Percy Jackson series last week.

Now in all honesty, I actually listened to The Lightening Thief audiobook. I had another 2 books on the go, and being an adult is just so ridiculously busy. So I figured I would pop the audiobook on so I could multitask like a pro and listen while I got shit done. And I really enjoyed it!

Beware of spoilers ahead…

Now of course, the writing style is definitely a little young for me, but I was expecting that. I simply rolled my eyes every time Percy didn’t know what was going on, even when it was crazy obvious! It was an exciting story right from the beginning, and with all the little questions it left unanswered… It definitely made me want to stick around in Percy’s world and read the rest of the series.

I did however have a bit of a problem with some of the more emotional stuff, particularly Percy’s Mothers “death”. Perhaps the younger readers that the book was aimed for were a bit underestimated in that department, but I feel like that could have actually been quite an emotionally educational part of the story. I feel like it was just kind of glossed over really quickly so that we could get to the exciting stuff again.

However, other than that I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this. The characters were very fun, even if they were a bit cliched at times. The inclusion of all the myths throughout the story was a lot of fun too, and I could see how these books could potentially spark an interest in some of the classics later on in life for the young readers it is aimed at.

Overall I am having a great time reading this series and being a part of this world. I am already about halfway through Sea of Monsters so keep your eyes out for the next update in the near future!

I loved this series when I first read it years ago, but I think I would have a hard time going back and rereading it now… it would just feel so young!! I’m glad you’re enjoying it! πŸ™‚

it definitely feels very young! Specially as this is my first time reading it. However, I often read books aimed at younger readers to decide whether or not I should add them to my daughters collection. So I try and look at them with a childs wonder and imagination πŸ™‚
